VP, Area Manager

General Responsibilities

This position is critical to achieving business results through people by connecting retail strategic objectives to branch behaviors and customer deliverables.   The Area Manager is the primary coach and advisor to the branch manager in ensuring sales success, customer experience and operational consistency. The incumbent facilitates Area and branch performance, sales growth, and customer satisfaction through visible leadership, performance management, key partnerships, prioritization, planning, and problem resolution. He/she is a visible representative of the Bank in the community, cultivating referral and prospecting opportunities, and is responsible for overall Area compliance with regulations, Bank policies, procedures, and operational integrity.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

The Area Manager’s Key Accountabilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead and administer sales management process and business development plans. Apply effective sales management practices.
  • Develop and maintain a sales culture focused on delivering an outstanding customer experience.
  • Develop and implement Branch sales and performance objectives.
  • Analyze performance metrics and data to determine appropriate strategies to achieve objectives. Hold managers accountable for results, ensuring early intervention and effective corrective action.
  • Conduct second Interviews for prospective branch employees to ensure top-talent selection.
  • Conduct periodic meetings to introduce/discuss products, compliance, sales results and operational items.
  • Provide relevant expertise and ensure that all branch employees have adequate training and development in sales, operations and compliance.
  • Effectively manage performance of direct reports, and provide support and guidance to managers with their teams including performance reviews, coaching and performance improvement plans.
  • Serve as a liaison to senior management and other departments of the bank.
  • Promote and ensure a positive work environment for employees within the Area.
  • Manage bank visibility/recognition in the communities within the Area.
  • Actively lead the Bank’s community development efforts across the Area.
  • Ensure Area maintains audit, compliance and security standards.

Supervision of Personnel

  • Branch Managers - comprising 10 to 15 direct reports.

Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment. Minimal physical effort required, freedom of movement on a regular basis. This is a full time position supporting a retail bank operation which is open six days per week. Work will be performed at branch locations and Maitland office or specific local location. Rotating shifts will be required.


  • The incumbent of this position is required to travel up to 90%. Must be able to travel to various locations.

Qualifications Summary


  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in a Business discipline or equivalent work experience in related fields.


  • 7-10 years’ experience in Retail Banking with at least 3 years of leadership experience, including sales, sales management, goal setting and team development.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Demonstrates excellent written, oral and presentation skills.
  • Displays strong financial acumen and knowledge of banking industry, products, and regulatory understanding.
  • Proficient in research and investigation of issues.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to supervise multiple locations and effectively manage remotely.
  • Ability to train staff—in operations, compliance, sales and service.
  • Strong managerial and leadership skills, with demonstrated ability to coach and develop staff.
  • Demonstrated sales, business development and relationship management experience, with track record of effective sales management.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships across the organization and influence others.
  • Ability to lead proactively through change.
  • Ability to use reports, metrics and other data to identify trends ,issues and opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong partnerships with local community & civic organizations, including participation in CRA qualified committees.
  • Proven ability to successfully handle multiple priorities under time constraints.
  • Solid problem solving, conflict resolution and team building skills.
  • Computer proficiency using MS Office products (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook)
